Director of Technology Transfer at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Principal Investigator of the Rehab Technologies Lab of IIT, an Innovation Lab co-funded by IIT and INAIL to develop new prostheses, exoskeletons and rehabilitation devices with high market potential in the healthcare sector.
He received an M.S. in Physics in 1999 and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Humanoid Robotics) from the University of Genoa.
He has also carried out extensive training on innovation management both in Italy at Jacobacci & Partners (Turin) and abroad at the European Patent Office (The Hague) and the Bergen Teknologioverføring (Bergen). From 2014 to 2019 he was contract professor at the University of Genoa – Faculty of Economics – in Collaborative Innovation and Technology Transfer. He is a board member of the Research & Entrepreneurship Foundation, a nonprofit organization funded by Italian banks, major industries and research organizations to support high-tech startups.
From 2017 to 2022 he was a Board Member of Movendo Technology, one of the emerging biomedical companies in Italy, and from 2005 to 2011 he was a member of the Board of Directors for Technology Transfer of the Italian Institute of Astrophysics (INAF, Rome).
Before joining IIT in 2008, he was a research technologist at the National Institute for the Physics of Matter (INFM, Italy) from 2002 to 2006, and at the National Research Council (CNR, Italy) from 2006 to 2008, gaining Extensive experience in developing industrial alliances and managing competitive industrial R&D projects.
Lorenzo De Michieli currently holds the role of Spoke 2 Coordinator – Smart devices and technologies for personal and remote healthcare – within the RAISE Innovation Ecosystem (Robotics and AI for Socio-economic Empowerment), created as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Mission 4, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
